Despite the high kinship within this breed the Västgötaspets is known as a relatively healthy breed. Of course there will always be incidental cases of illness.
To maintrain the breed as healthy as possible, the breeding pair is tested for eye diseases and HD (hip dysplasia).
The breed is a natural bobtail and dogs are born with various tail lengths and types.
The breed belongs tot he FCI group 5 Spitz and Primitive types.
